Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is located on the west coast of Africa and shares a border with Guinea and Liberia. Malaria transmission occurs year-round throughout the country and the entire population of approximately 6.5 million is at risk. More than 2 million outpatient visits are attributed to malaria each year, of which about half are children under five years of age. In addition to the impact the disease has on the country’s most vulnerable groups, young children and pregnant women, malaria is a major impediment to socio-economic development and contributor to poverty. The national malaria control program’s overall vision is to provide access to malaria control interventions to its entire population with a goal to reduce malaria morbidity and mortality by at least 40 percent between 2015 and 2020.

Each Malaria Operational Plan has been endorsed by the U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator and reflects collaborative discussions with the national malaria control programs and partners in country. Changes to these plans are reflected in revised postings.
