PMI is introducing a new feature on the website called Country in Focus. PMI will feature one of its focus countries on the website and send out an e-update with new success stories, photos, news and more. Senegal is the first country to be featured; Kenya will be the next country to be featured.

Senegal has made significant progress against malaria and is aiming for pre-elimination of the disease by 2018. Recent activities include free and subsidized ITN distribution nationwide via multiple channels; IRS activities in four districts; the training and supervising of health workers to ensure quality malaria in pregnancy services, and much more.

USAID Lauds Ghanaian Schools for Their Malaria Prevention Efforts

USAID presented two sets of football jerseys to two schools in Sege Circuit in recognition of their outstanding efforts as part of a national incentive program to encourage schools to share vital, accurate information about malaria prevention in their communities.

Malaria Cases Reduced in Ghana’s Northern Region

A PMI-supported antimalarial IRS campaign has led to significant reduction in malaria cases in parts of the Northern Region.

FDA Laboratory Attains International Recognition

The Laboratory Service Department of the Food and Drugs Authority of Ghana recently attained international recognition in the area of pharmaceutical quality control. Technical assistance from the U.S. Pharmacopeial Convention, funded by PMI, was instrumental in helping Ghana’s Laboratory Service Department to achieve this ISO accreditation.

Protection of Refugees through PMI Kenya-Donated Insecticide

PMI Kenya donated insecticide for an IRS campaign in a refugee camp, which resulted in the protection of an estimated 143,000 people from malaria.

Engaging Senegal’s Home-Based Care Providers in the Fight against Malaria

Nine in ten malaria cases in Senegal are initially treated at home, and only 50 percent of cases ever receive formal care. Home-based care providers, who work in villages more than 5 kilometers from the nearest health post, are key to Senegal’s fight against malaria, one of the primary killers of children younger than five years old.

Have Pit, Will Travel

To increase efficiency and improve environmental safety, AIRS piloted the use of mobile soak pits during the 2013–2014 IRS campaign in remote areas of Madagascar’s Central Highlands and seven districts in the south, where difficult roads require spray operators to access villages via foot.
