Partners in the Greater Mekong Subregion Mobilize around Malaria Elimination Goal

According to a new report from WHO, there has been a major decline in cases and deaths across the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) over the last 3 years. “Progress in the GMS was made possible through greater access to effective malaria control tools, particularly artemisinin-based combination therapies, rapid diagnostic tests, and long-lasting insecticidal nets as well as improved access to these services by vulnerable populations across the region,” said Professor H.E. Eng Huot, the Cambodian Secretary of State. But the spread of antimalarial drug resistance threatens to undermine these gains. Thus, the way forward entails eliminating malaria altogether from the subregion.
