Fighting Malaria: Progress and Challenges, US HoR Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Human Rights – 12/05/11
Malaria was the subject of a congressional hearing held Monday by Congressman Chris Smith (NJ-04), chairman of the House congressional panel that oversees global health issues. The hearing focused on the latest developments, including promising new preventative measures against the disease, which annually kills three-quarters of a million people around the world, mostly children.

President's Malaria Initiative Launched in Guinea - 11/09/11
Admiral Robert Timothy Ziemer, U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator, launched the President’s Malaria Initiative at the U.S. Embassy in Guinea on November 9, 2011. Minister of Health Dr. Naman Keita and Minister of Plan Souleymane Cissé represented the Government of Guinea.
- PMI Launches New Collection of Malaria Communication Materials – 10/31/11
PMI has created a repository that showcases malaria communication materials developed by our partners across PMI’s focus countries in sub-Saharan Africa. This provides technical staff working in malaria with access to communications materials that have been tested and used in other settings. Users can view, download, contribute, and share communication materials, as well as the strategies, research, and testing and evaluation documents related to those materials. For 2011, a new area has been selected for IRS: seven communes of Atacora department. Benin’s National Malaria Control Program and USAID decided to move the spraying to expand the benefits of IRS to more people in a larger geographic coverage area.- French Version [PDF, 215KB]

- I Go To Disneyland ... In Ethiopia – 11/23/10
Read a blog post by Ezekiel Emanuel in The New Republic about his trip to a PMI-funded health center in Ethiopia. The health center has put together all the pieces to fight malaria and other health problems. The surrounding village has been systematically covered, so every sleeping space has bed nets. The huts have been sprayed with insecticide. When someone shows up with a fever, the first thing they get is a rapid malaria test.

How I Came to Own a Goat - 11/19/10
Read a blog post by Ezekiel Emanuel in The New Republic about his trip in Senegal to Kissan, a village of 526 people that lies in the Tambacounda Region. Kissan is one of the hot spots for malaria that killed 900,000 people last year alone. Kissan was part of the initiative to keep mosquitoes out of homes, with a combination of netting for beds and indoor residual spraying.

Senegal's malaria control efforts have enabled the country to significantly reduce malaria-related morbidity and mortality, according to Focus on Senegal, a report released today by the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) as part of the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) Progress and Impact series.
- Liberia National Red Cross Society Moves To Reduce Prevalence Of Malaria Distributes Insecticide-Treated Mosquito Nets To Residents - 08/07/10
Supported by the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare through the United States President Malaria Initiative, the Liberian Red Cross conducted assessment in the beneficiary communities and launched a 20-day campaign to provide the residents with the insecticide-treated mosquito nets, free of charge.
- NIH Funds 10 International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research - 07/08/10
In an effort to accelerate the control of malaria and help eliminate it worldwide, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases announced approximately $14 million in first-year funding to establish 10 new malaria research centers around the world. The seven-year awards will establish the International Centers of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMRs) in regions where malaria is endemic, including two focus countries of the President's Malaria Initiative, Malawi and Uganda.
